Agataako is the current theme for night clubs, one song that plays and won't leave anyone on their feet but do we know what it means and who the main man behind the hit song is. Check out Deejay Pius from Rwanda as he tells us more about himself.
First things First, who is the Deejay Pius?
My Name is Rukabuza Pius. Married to a one beautiful Ange Umulisa and we have a baby boy together named Yuhi Abriel Rukabuza.
I am a professional DJ/Producer who has been deejaying for more than 10 years now though through spreading wings started my solo career as a musician in April 2016. Formerly, I belonged to a duo named Two 4real and we did popular songs like 'I will never let her go' featuring Roberto of Amarula hit song and Ray Signature from Uganda.
Tell us about your school life?
I went to Mbarara Pentecostal for primary then joined Kigezi College Butobere, Lycee De Kigali University. In my higher learning I attended Kigali institute of science and technology 2005-2008 (IT) and finally, in 2009-2013, went to Kigali Independent University for law.
Besides music what else do you do?
Am a business man, the C.E.O of an Entertainment company called 1000 hills Entertainment. We manage talents mainly DJS, host and promote Events. Am also a Man United fan.
Do we see you settling here, you have spent quality time in Uganda?
(Smiles) ... I don't see myself settling here though I see myself visiting Uganda more often because of the great audio production houses and level of artistes. I want to be on the same pace with you guys, Rwanda is somehow slow for me.
For the time you've been in Uganda, what’s your favorite dish?
(Thinks and thinks again) I must say Posho and Nile perch though might seem very funny to many. So if I give you a visit don’t rush to Macrons, rice, chips mention it. The above purely works for me.
How do you rate the deejaying industry of Ug?
I must say the Dj industry of Uganda is pretty aggressive. The work ethic is high and the industry is developed as well when you look at the equipment. Talent wise, some are good and some are fairly Normal.
What are some of the big names over heard in Rwanda?
I must say Dj Shiru not because he is the best but he is out there and very popular. Some of the others seem to be on the same level though the television deejays like Selector Jay and Dj Brian are known because NTV the beat show is over watched in Rwanda.
What’s your biggest motivation for deejaying?
People have always been the main motivation for my deejaying work. They keep appreciating me when on decks and always lament that i am different from other DJs so this keep me moving.
How much do you charge for your show?
(Sighs). I don’t have a specific charge of international gigs frankly because i have no management right now. So everything right now is negotiable according to variables.
No management so how do you handle it all?
Laughs out loud... I do, I am the business
Before I forget, what does agataako mean?
Agatako is a Kinyarwanda word that means a decoration that’s to say a symbol of love. I actually perform this song on weddings back home ... it’s not like how it’d be taken here in Uganda.
Who do see yourself working with in the future?
I surely don't limit myself when it comes to collaborations. I think talent should work together so am open to everyone as long as we agree on terms and conditions.
Where do we see Pius in 5 years from now?
I really don't know where I will be 5yrs from now but Africa will know me. I pray to win an award for Rwanda and East Africa at large ... but other than that ... the dream destination is to be global. I want to take Rwandan/African music to the whole world.
