Police opened gunfire in Mwanjari, Southern Division in Kabale Municipality last evening to protect two suspected murderers from being lynched by residents.

Reports indicate that residents descended on Bosco Tumusiime, Bruce Tukamushaba and unidentified woman, all residents of Bubaare Sub County in Rubanda District accusing them of masterminding the killing of Denis Kato Bamuhiga, a resident of Nyangande cell in Southern Division in Kabale Municipality.

Thugs ambushed Bamuhiga at Mwanjari cemetery in Igabiro cell Southern Division in the wee hours of March 29th, 2017 on his way to Kampala and cut his neck. Residents found him lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

Last evening, angry residents descended on a group of people in Mwanjari swamp on suspicion that they were behind the attack. They lynched one of the suspects only identified as Alex and tossed his body in Kiruruma River, assaulted Bosco Tumusiime, Bruce Tukamushaba and unidentified woman, all residents of Bubaare Sub County in Rubanda District and injured them seriously.

A group of Anti-Riot personnel led by Henry Kisembo, the head of the Field Force Unit stormed the area to rescue the suspects, but the residents started pelting the officers with stones prompting them to fire live bullets and teargas to disperse them before whisking off the suspects to Kabale Central Police Station.

Residents would later storm Kabale Central Police Station armed with stones and sticks demanding for the release of the suspects. As a result, Police opened fire and teargas in the air to disperse the mob. None of the residents was picked up in connection to the mob attack.
