The minister for Kampala, Betty Olive Namisango Kamya, BONK has ordered all vendors who had returned on streets to leave with immediate effect, or be arrested.

BONK says vendors are using the death of their own, Olive Basemera as an excuse to return to the streets, thinking the KCCA law enforcement team is not functional.

Basemera, a mother of three died on Friday last week, while fleeing from the mean faced KCCA enforcement officers. She fell into Nakivubo channel and died instantly.

Her death drew wide spread condemnation from city dwellers, politicians and activists.

On Tuesday, Kamya’s junior Benny Namugwanya said they are faced with an uphill task due to the mindset of vendors who are reluctant to change. Namugwanya said the vendors prefer working along Kampala streets rather than occupy markets that have been established by Kampala Capital City Authority.

She however, says no Ugandan should lose life because government is not bettering the city for dead bodies. Namugwanya explained that the KCCA law enforcement operates under the ordinances that were passed by Kampala City Council that was replaced by Kampala Capital City Act.

Addressing the press at media center this morning, Kamya said she had written to the IGP, asking for an extra 300 trained police officers to help in clearing the city.
