At least 7,000 pilgrims are ready to start their journey from Tororo Archdiocese to begin their walk to Namugongo Martyrs' Shrine, ahead of this year’s Marytyrs Day celebrations.
This year, Tororo Archdiocese was chosen to lead the Martyrs' day celebrations under the theme, "Let us walk in the light of God as a family ".
On Sunday, Emmanuel Obbo, the Archbishop of Tororo Archdiocese, while speaking at a fundraising drive over the weekend, said that the pilgrims will set off for Namugongo Catholic Shrine on May 25th and 26th.
He urged them to renew their faith and also dedicate their time to God in prayer, so that their prayer requests are granted.
According to Fr. Godfrey Okello, the chairperson Pilgrims committee, the pilgrims will leave in two groups, with the first group comprising of 3,000 pilgrims to be flagged off on May 25th and the second group of 4,000 from the Elgon region, will begin walking on May 26th.
The minister of state for Health in-charge General duties, Sarah Achieng Opendi, who was the chief guest at the fundraising event urged the pilgrims not to engage in merry making while at Namugongo.
Last year, Tororo Archdiocese, launched a fundraising drive of 720 million shillings for the Marty's day. The archdiocese has since raised 660 Million Shillings.
The Archdiocese covers Tororo, Kapchorwa, Sironko, Kween, Bukwo, Busia, Butaleja, Manafwa, Bulambuli, Pallisa, Budaka, Bududa, Mbale, Butebo, Kibuku and Namisindwa.
