A 29 year-old, 2nd year student of Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara is in police custody on allegations of faking his own kidnap and demanding a ransom of 2 million shillings.
The student has been identified as Evans Ariho, a resident of Bugamba Rwampala county, Mbarara district. Ariho allegedly disappeared from home on Sunday and started calling family members using his phone, claiming that he was in the hands of kidnappers and that they were demanding a ransom.
However, the Rwizi region police spokesperson Samson Kasasira says after his family sent the money, Ariho returned home on Tuesday (yesterday), which raised suspicion of the parents. According to Kasasira, the parents immediately reported the matter at Mbarara Police Station leading to his arrest.
Ariho, who is currently detained at Mbarara central Police station, said he intended to use the ransom money to start a business in Mbarara town.
