President Yoweri Museveni has asked the army leadership to ensure that retiring Generals have a good life in retirement. The president made this call while presiding over the discharge/retirement of 11 Generals at a function held at State House, Entebbe on Wednesday evening.
The retirees include 6 Major Generals and 5 Brigadier Generals who have served in the forces from 1963.
The Major Generals include Ali Kiiza, former chief presidential pilot. Others are Joshua Masaba, presidential advisor on air force matters, Kasirye Ggwanga, the Presidential advisor on Security in central region, Hussein Adda, the Commandant General Headquarters Bombo, James Ssebaggala and John Mateeka.
While the Brigadier Generals are; Jacob Musajjawaza, Yowasi Kiiza, Stephen Othieno, Olanya Ojara and Mark Kodili Ayiasi.
The president in his speech called for the establishment of a good University, primary and secondary schools for the children of soldiers, noting that soldiers shouldn't be exposed to social pressures like paying tuition for their children.
"The pressure of taking children to school can give you hypertension for nothing. So those who are still in active service and the UPDF is still there, let the new regime of Muhoozi and Musanyufu implement what I advised them. There is no need why soldiers should worry about health and education," Museveni said.
He further directed that army shops should be stocked with construction materials and not cigarettes and whiskeys.
On behalf of his comrades, Major General Joshua Masaba, the Presidential advisor on air force matters, thanked President Museveni for liberating Uganda, adding that they are still ready to serve government even in their retirement. Masaba said they leave behind the best military force, thanks to the President.
Adolf Mwesige, the Defense Minister said the country is indebted to the officers for their wonderful service to Uganda and the region. He said UPDF is the pride of Uganda and Africa because of its discipline and professionalism.
The Chief of Defence Forces-CDF General David Muhoozi acknowledged the service of the retiring Generals, saying they dedicated their lives to serving the country and went through several ups and downs, which saw some of them fleeing into exile. He said UPDF will document the unique experiences of the Generals for institutional memory.
