The Ivory tower (Makerere University) has suspended two more students identified as Kasim Njalira from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Derrick Obedgiu from the School of Education for threatening to cause chaos within in the institution.
The number of suspended students is now five, after three others were also suspended by the university administrationon Monday. The trio include; Daniel Kituno from the College of Education and External Studies, Jobs Dhabona from College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Samuel Kigula from College of Health Science.
According to the Vice Chancellor Prof Nawangwe, the five students have been circulating messages calling for defiance against university management and also participated in an illegal demonstration on Sunday, during which they disrupted the Guild Representative Council session, causing danger to the lives of the participants and damaging university property.
"Your said illegal actions are a breach of the university policies and national policies and give rise to both criminal and civil liability on your part, despite several engagements, you refused to take heed" Nawangwe’s letter reads.
The VC explains that their suspension runs into "further notice" and that this meant to ensure safety and security of members of the university community and property as well provide serene environment for peaceful activities of the university.
According to Fiona Kokoi the Makerere vice Guild President, the students were protesting against 15 per cent fees increment that is slated to start with the 2018/19 academic year.
The university opened on Saturday 4th August 2018 for first-year students and continuing students are expected to report on Saturday this week.
Nawangwe accuses the students of posting nflammatory and derogatory messages on social media, calling for defiance and acts that could cause injury to persons and property of the university.
He also cautioned six students including; Ainomugisha Penelope from College from College of Education and External Studies, Kwisaba Fahad from College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Adiit Mark Raymond from School of Law, Chombo James from College of Education and External Studies, Sulait Gamukama from College of Humanities and Social Sciences and David Musiri from College of Education and External Studies.
These were issued with letters of final warning.
