Former Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura has been read three charges of repatriation of Rwandan dissidents, illegally issuing fire arms to civilian groups and failure to protect military materials.
Gen. Kayihura was charged before the general military court martial in Makindye on Friday and he denied all the charges. His lawyers led by Joseph Matsiko that their client has been in custody for more than 72 hours which is not in conformity of the law.
“Our client has been in the custody of the military police, it is today when we bring some air on what he was charged with. Gen. Kale Kayihura deserves to walk out of this court with freedom. To go home to his family and touch his wife” the lawyer argued.
Kayihura’s lawyers applied for bail by mouth, but were advised by court leadership to put it in writing and present the application on August 28th 2018. Court was later adjourned to September 4th 2018.
Court under the chairmanship of Gen. Gutti heard that Kayihura aided the kidnapping by commission, repatriating Rwandan exiles and refugees and Ugandan citizens to Rwanda between the years 2012-2016.
Court further heard that the former IGP failed to protect war material. And that between 2010 to 2018, he allowed issue of firearms to unauthorized persons. These included the notorious Boda Boda 2010 whose leaders Kitata Abdullah is facing charges before the same court.
