Government has been tasked to find a lasting solution to the Bududa District killer landslides that have cost Uganda of hundreds of citizens since 2010.

The call was made by Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga the speaker of Parliament, in the aftermath of Thursday October 12th 2018 which claimed at least 51 lives.

The tragedy occurred in the villages that make up Bukalasi Sub county in Bududa District after River Manafwa burst its banks and swept away homes and residents.

While addressing members of the press this afternoon, the speaker said government needs to come up with a lasting solution since the disaster is now predictable.

“I hope we could find a solution to the situation because it is recurrent and we can almost predict when the next landslides will come. So we need a serious proposal” she said.

Since 2010, more than 400 people have died in landslides that occur during the rainy season between the months of July to October. The area lies in the foothills of Mt. Elgon.

Over the years, government has campaigned for evacuation of residents to less disaster prone districts, but some are adamant to leave their ancestral homes.

In 2010, at least 50 children were among those that died after a home they had sought shelter at was washed away by running waters.

The death toll from Thursday landslides is expected to rise from the current 51.
