Makerere University Academic Staff Association - MUASA chairperson Dr Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi has been suspended for inciting indiscipline among staff.
The University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe suspended the MUASA chairperson in a letter dated January 17, 2019 where her accused Dr Kamunyu of inciting staff into indiscipline acts.
Earlier today at the last day of graduation ceremony, Makerere University Convocation chairman Dr. Odoi Tanga urged governing councils of both Makerere University and Makerere University Business School - MUBS to respect the independence of the University administration.
The convocation is a body that brings together staff and alumni of the institution.
Dr. Kamunyu’s suspension comes at the backdrop of disagreements between staff associations at the University and the university administration led by Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.
The beef between the two entities peaked with the recent dismissal of senior members of academic staff, some of who were accused of insubordination, among others.
At least 2 of the members of staff who were fired on grounds of insubordination had previously challenged a directive by Prof. Nawangwe calling for fresh elections by Staff Associations. The two wrote a letter to the university council secretary stating that the Vice Chancellor had no mandate to meddle into staff associations and that his call for fresh elections was nugatory.
However, a furious Odoi says that some members of the University council have become project owners on campus and interfered with day-to-day operations of institutions, advising university councils of both MUK and MUBS to respect the university management and refrain from meddling into their business.
He warns that if they do not heed, the convocation will cause change.
