Police in Kagadi district are investigating the death of a 10-year-old pupil of Buharura Primary school in Kiryanga sub-county who drowned in River Nguuse.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson identifies the deceased as Grace Tushabe is a P.5 pupil and resident of Nishamba Village Kiryanga sub-county Kagadi district.
According to Hakiza, Tushabe drowned on Wednesday while swimming in the river with her colleagues and was swept away by the speedy running water.
Tushabe’s body was discovered at around 7:30 pm floating on the river by area residents who retrieved it. It was taken to Kagadi Hospital Mortuary for postmortem and later handed over to the relatives for burial.
Hakiza reveals that the deceased together with her colleagues escaped from school without the consent of the school administration to go swimming in the river.
He therefore sounded a warning to school authorities in the area, to be vigilant with pupils who go swimming in river Nguuse saying it has claimed several lives.
