Uganda Police Force has withdrawn its officers totaling up to 261 from the Kampala Capital City Authority –KCCA following orders from the Inspector General of Police –IGP Martin Ochola.
Fred Enanga the Police Spokesperson confirmed the development on Monday afternoon, during the weekly police briefing at Nagauru police headquarters.
According to Enanga, the IGP wrote to Eng. Andrew Kitaka, the acting KCCA Executive Director about a month ago advising him to find ways of guarding major installations, as police officers attached to the Authority would be withdrawn.
The IGP argued that the force was facing manpower shortage in Kampala and wanted its personnel for deployment at vital places such as stations. Enanga said there was no response from the Authority until the deadline elapsed on Thursday last week, prompting Ochola to order the Kampala Metropolitan police leadership to ensure all police officers deployed for guard duties at the homes of KCCA directors and other installations are withdrawn.
However, guards attached to the Deputy ED, the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and a few guarding City Hall were left untouched. Peter Kaujju the KCCA Spokesperson and Kampala Lord Mayor Lukwago were not readily available for comment.
