Drama ensued in Gulu Town on Thursday evening as security personnel rounded up an Eritrean national also truck driver who tested positive for Coronavirus Disease on Tuesday, May 12.

According to Patrick Jimmy Okema the Aswa River Region Police Public Relations Officer, the patient had already spent two days in the community after he arrived in Gulu and was intercepted from Buganda Pub, along Gulu – Kampala road following a police-led intelligence operation backed by the military and health workers.

The Gulu District Chairperson Martin Ojara Mapenduzi who is also coordinator for the District Task Force, noted that the driver’s sample tested positive from Elegu at Uganda – South Sudan border point in Amuru District.

Five people believed to have been his contacts were also found and taken to Gulu School of Clinical Officers quarantine facility where they will remain for the next 14 days.

On Wednesday, security personnel rounded up and evacuated two other truck drivers including a Ugandan who tested positive for COVID-19 at Elegu border point. The duo was taken to Gulu Regional Hospital treatment centre.

The Gulu Regional Hospital in-charge of Public Health Department, Loum Janani Bishop says they were alerted by the national surveillance team about the medical conditions of the trio and were prepared to receive them.

This brings to 8, the number of patients being treated for the infectious virus disease at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital. Uganda has 160 confirmed COVID-19 cases after 21 people tested positive to the disease on Thursday.
