The presidential directive of passenger service vehicles carrying half capacity has tongues wagging in Kampala already, after taxi drivers agreed on new fares starting Thursday 4th June when they return to work.
In his address on Monday night, the President announced that public transport can return to work, but must adhere to his directives, which include carrying half capacity, with the driver and conductor. Mr. Museveni said conductors were let to return to work, because they need to open and close doors and help sanitize passengers’ hands.
He also announced that for anyone to enter a taxi, they must be wearing a face mask. However, several taxi drivers said they had all come together to agree on uniform fares in order to fit within the budget. They argue that while a taxi must carry only 50% passengers, fuel prices remain the same.
According to the newly announced fares, people living in Entebbe will pay the highest fare of UGX 8,000 to come to Kampala. The normal fee was 3,000 shillings.
Munyonyo, Ggabba has been hiked from 1,500 to 4,000 Shillings, Ntinda from the usual 1,500 to 2,000 shillings.
