Live bullets rocked Kwania Central Police Station in Kwania district when an angry mob stormed the station protesting the arrest of seven murder suspects.
Police on Monday arrested the 7 suspects identified as; Jacinta Oluma, the Aboko parish Female Councilor, Douglas Otim, Susan Okello, Moses Opio, Betty Oree, Jacob Ocwaa, and Bua Geoffrey, in Amuli Village in Aboko parish.
The suspects were alleged involved in the murder of 25-year-old Dickens Okullo who was lynched in December last year for alleged goat theft.
However, their arrest and subsequent detention didn’t go down well with residents who on Wednesday morning, stormed the police station. Over 100 residents of Aboko parish in Aduku Sub County led a procession from Corner Aboko, which is over 2 kilometers away to Aduku town council with intentions of storming Kwania Central Police Station.
They accused Edith Basailirwa the Kwania District Police Commander of the “unlawful arrest,” of the suspects and demanded that they are immediately released. But the armed police officers dispersed the group by firing in the air.
According to Thomas Opio Okene, a senior pastor at Aboko Baptist Church, police should not have apprehended the suspects without conducting proper investigations.
Meanwhile, Edith Basalirwa, the Kwania District Police Commander said the situation has been temporarily managed and they are considering holding a security meeting with their local leaders because as security, they couldn’t allow them to raid CPS.
By press time, several district officials led by a team from the Regional Police headquarters were seen preparing for a meeting with the residents.
