Uganda has today December 1, 2020 joined the rest of the world to commemorate the World AIDS Day. This year’s theme is; “National Solidarity and a shared responsibility towards ending AIDS.”
According to Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu the State Minister for Primary Health Care, Uganda has made significant strides in the fight against HIV/AD\IDS. She told the press at Uganda Media center in Kampala today, that Uganda is ranked among the first 14 countries globally to have achieved the UNAIDS 2nd and 3rd targets in the fight against HIV.
Dr. Moriku says that in 2019/2020 Uganda registered an increase in the number of adults and children on ART achieving 89% coverage (1,241,509/1,400,000) from 86% (1,198,445/1,393,445).
She also added that HIV positive pregnant women not on ARVs for eMTCT during pregnancy, labour, delivery and postpartum increased to 94% from 91%, while ART retention increased to 78% from 76%.
Dr. Kaducu says that the UNAIDS target is that by 2020, 90% of all people living with HIV will know their HIV status; all people with diagnosed HIV infection will receive sustained antiretroviral therapy; and 90% of all people receiving antiretroviral therapy will have viral suppression.
