Government has been tasked to contact their Democratic Republic of Congo counterparts for the release of Fishermen who were abducted on L. Albert.
The call was made by fishermen at the Kaiso Landing Site in Hoima districtIt is alleged that four-armed militiamen raided areas of Lake Albert near Kaiso Landing Site in Mbegu Parish on March 14, 2021 and abducted 16 fishermen.
The armed men also stole four fishing boats, four boat engines and several sets of fishing nets before crossing back to DRC with the loot.
According to available information, some of the abducted Ugandan fishermen are currently being held at the Tchomia Landing Site, Bunia district in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Now, their colleagues at Kaiso Landing Site want Ugandan authorities to engage their counterparts in the DRC for their release.
According to Jackson Ndiba a fisherman at Kaiso, there are fears that their colleagues' lives are at risk and that the government needs to immediately intervene and rescue them from the hands of the militiamen.
The Albertine region police spokesperson Julius Hakiza noted that efforts are being made to engage the DRC authorities to forge a way forward on how the Ugandans can be set free.
