A total of 1,425 persons were arrested countrywide in the last one week for flouting the COVID-19 Guidelines issued by President Yoweri Museveni, at the beginning of the ongoing 42 days’ lockdown.
While addressing the media at the Joint Security Press conference at Police Headquarters in Naguru on Monday, Fred Enanga the police spokesperson noted that this is a very high number.
He added that despite the call for people to remain in their homes and stay safe, many are still reckless and mindless of the SOPs.
According to Enanga, out of the 1,425 persons arrested, 825 were cautioned, 164 were released on Bond pending Court, 116 were being taken to Court while 320 had been charged to Court.
Police also impounded 786 motor vehicles across the country. Out of these, 497 after issuing EPS tickets, 134 motorists were cautioned and their cars released, while 155 are still parked and unclaimed.
Also, 4,314 motorcycles and issued 2,878 EPS tickets. 935 riders were cautioned and their motorcycles released while 501 motorcycles are still unclaimed.
Enanga says some vehicles remain unclaimed because police demands for proof of ownership, registration cards among other documents.
“Once these motorcycles are impounded, we also carry out further investigations to find out proof of ownership” Enanga says.
He added that security agencies will continue to enforce lockdown measures because it has worked in many countries including Uganda.
