Uganda will on Friday, 26th November, 2021, join the rest of the world to launch the beginning of sixteen (16) Days of Activism Campaign against Gender Based Violence (GBV) 2021.
The campaign was first started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and has since grown into a global campaign.
This year 2021, marks the 30th Anniversary of the Campaign. The Campaign begins on the 25th of November of each year which is the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women and runs up to 10th December, which is the International Human Rights Day. According to Ho
n Mutuuzo Peace the Minister of State for Gender and Culture Affairs, the National launch for this year will take place at Amagi Primary school, in Kamdini Sub County, Oyam District on 26th November 2021 under the theme; “Orange the World: End Violence Against Women and Girls Now!”
The minister noted that the Campaign is taking place amidst escalating cases of GBV country-wide which calls for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to end Violence against Women and Girls.
While addressing reporters at Uganda Media Centre on Tuesday, Mutuuzo said that the National launch will kick start a series of activities by State and non – State actors in different localities across the country.
The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development is also coordinating efforts by all stakeholders around this campaign to; raise awareness on gender-based violence as a human rights violation, public health threat, economic and social impediment at the family, community, national, regional and international levels, provide a forum for dialogue and develop a strategy for sharing on good practices for preventing and responding to GBV, demonstrate the solidarity of women and men to address issues of GBV, strengthen local initiatives and networks of stakeholders to address GBV, and advocate for action by Government, Religious and Cultural Institutions, Faith Based and Civil Society Organizations and other Actors as well as assess progress on actions being taken by all stakeholders to address GBV.
