The Judiciary has established new high court circuits in six districts to minimize case backlog.

The High Court circuits in Hoima, Iganga, Luwero, Moroto, Tororo, and Rukungiri districts, will immediately start operation.

A statement released by the Judiciary shows the names of judges attached to these courts including; Justice Byaruhanga Jesse Rugyema for Hoima, Justice David Batema-Iganga, Lady Justice Henrietta Wolayo for Luwero, Mary Ikit for Moroto, Tom Chemutai for Rukungiri, and Henry Isabirye Kawesa for Tororo.

Explaining the background to the new High court circuits, the Chief Registrar, Sarah Langa Siu stated that these were designated under Statutory Instrument No. 55 of 2016.

“In 2016, the Hon. The Chief Justice in the exercise of his powers under Article 133 of the Constitution and in accordance with the provisions of Section 19(2) of the Judicature Act, and in consultation with the Hon. the Principal Judge, designated new High Court Circuits in addition to those already in existence”,

— Sarah Langa Siu said in the statement.

Now, the judiciary says arrangements are underway to transfer all cases that fall under the new circuits but had been filed at the different High Court Divisions and Circuits. Langa noted that with all these arrangements in place, major operations in the newly operationalized courts will start this month.

This deployment was made by the Principal Judge Dr. Flavian Zeija and took effect on September 18th, 2022.
