On May 28, 2023, a chilling incident unfolded at Walumbe landing site in Mayuge district, leaving residents gripped with fear. One of their own fell victim to a crocodile attack, prompting concerns for their safety.
At approximately 1:00 am, two fishermen ventured into the lake for their customary work. Tragically, it was during this outing that the crocodile struck. Moses Mukuye, 35, was identified as the unfortunate victim by Christopher Damba, the secretary for defence at Walumbe land site.
According to preliminary investigations, the survivor of the attack narrowly escaped as the crocodile devoured his companion. Recounting the harrowing experience, the survivor described how the reptile consumed all of his friend's intestines. Overwhelmed by fear, he was forced to swim for his life.
"It ate all the intestines. I was so scared and had to swim for my life," the survivor said.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Damba promptly informed the Police, urging them to conduct further investigations into the incident. The community remains on edge as they await more information and contemplate the safety measures necessary to prevent future tragedies.
