Reuben Kisembo the Bishop of Rwenzori Diocese, has warned Members of Parliament against accepting bribes to amend the constitution (Age limit) to allow President, Yoweri Museveni to stand for re-election.
During the Easter Service at St John's Cathedral Kabarole, Kisembo said should the MPs accept to be bribed; they will have done a disservice to the people of Uganda.
"Our Members of Parliament should desist from being bribed. They should not tamper with our constitution, "Kisembo said amidst applause from the congregation.
He referred to 2005 when MPs were bribed to amend the constitution to remove the two-term limit, adding that a repeat of the same will be an injustice to the people of Uganda.
"If the MPs are bribed the second time, it will be injustice to its citizens. They should respect our constitution," Kisembo said. The 1995 constitution bars anyone above 75 years of age from standing for president. This means President Museveni would be ineligible to seek re-election in 2021.
There are reports that a section of National Resistance Movement - NRM MP planning to amend the constitution to allow Museveni to contest in 2021. Kisembo also appealed to President Museveni not to be tempted to stand again.
He said that despite achievements of his party, Museveni should reward the country by retiring peacefully. "We want to see peaceful handover of power and the next person is elected president," Kisembo said.
Kisembo also decried the rampant corruption in the country citing the arrest of Herbert Kabafunzaki, the State Minister for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations.
Kisembo requested the relevant institutions in the country to play their roles of fighting corruption. The service was attended by King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who was celebrating his 25th Birthday.
