Uganda Cranes bundled out hosts Ethiopia 5-3 on post-match penalties to make it to the final of Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup on Thursday.

The match had ended 0-0 after full time and extra time and had to be decided by post-match penalties where Uganda scored all their kicks while Ethiopia missed one. Ethiopia goalkeeper Abel Mamo was forced to an early save in the 11th minute as Uganda Cranes looked to be the more determined side to break the deadlock.

Two minutes later, Uganda Cranes got a free-kick at the edge of the box which went wide and in the 17th minute, they had their first corner for the match. Asechalew Girma then had the first chance to put Ethiopia ahead but his shot went wide in the 20th minute.

The Ethiopian goalkeeper was then called into action once again making a brilliant save. With the match approaching the half hour mark, both sides increased their tempo but it was still Uganda Cranes, who had more chances winning a corner in the 33rd minute.

Three minutes after that, Uganda goalkeeper Thomas Watenga had to do everything to stop an Ethiopian free-kick and it was the first real chance by the hosts to get ahead. Uganda Crane’s Ivan Ntege was booked just before half time for rough play. On resumption, Uganda made the first change of the match bringing in Isaac Mulemi for Frank Kulanda but it still did not yield any fruits.

Instead, it was the home side who got a clear chance to get ahead when Bereket Bogola found himself unmarked but failed to score with acres of space. With no goals in full time the match had to be decided in extra time.
