Residents of Cheptilyal village, Kapchorwa District are mourning the death Mzee Kiboi Kiptui, the father of Olympic gold medalist, Stephen Kiprotich.
Mzee Kiptui, 93, breathed his last at about 8 pm on Tuesday.
Speaking from Kapchorwa Hospital, Mr Kiprotich told Daily Monitor that his fathers’ death is a shock to the family.
“Despite his old age, my father has been well until two weeks ago when he became weak. He complained of severe stomach pain and headache,” Mr Kiprotich said.
He said Mzee Kiptui was transferred to Kapchorwa Hospital on 27 November.
He said his father was given the necessary attention and doctors were sure he was recovering.
“His condition changed on Monday evening when he started to breath with difficulty. Doctors responded but unfortunately, we lost him this evening,” he said.
Kiprotich said that he could not come to terms with his father’s “sudden” death.
“I can’t believe it. I think my mothers’ sickness stressed him so much because he had no serious illness according to my interactions with doctors here,” he said.
He said that the family would wait for a post-mortem to make conclusions.
He described his father as very hardworking.
"My parents brought us up under very difficult conditions. This is the time they would be enjoying," he said.
Meanwhile, Kiprotichs’ mother who has been in and out of hospital for the last fourteen years is also critically ill in the same hospital where her husband passed on.
Mr Kiprotich said that her situation has been worrying for the last couple of weeks and doctors are doing their best to save her life.
“We have been treating her from Mt. Elgon Hospital, Mbale and other private clinics. I am really worried of her state and I pray that God heals her at this trying moment,” Kiprotich said.
