Human rights activist Nana Mwafrika Mbarikiwa has announced her intention to contest for the Kampala Woman MP position in the upcoming 2026 general elections.

The activist, who is popular for protests and activism across the city, says she is moving from the trenches to the forefront of politics.

The known supporter of Kizza Besigye says she will contest as an independent candidate.

She is basing her decision on the support of Kampala women and has warned the incumbent, Shamim Malende, to be prepared for the challenge ahead.

"Just like that, this morning, I have decided to offer myself for service to you, the Women of Kampala, for the 2026-2031 term. Shamim Malende, please concentrate on getting well, or you will ask for Wara 💧 🚰. Akalulu ka Miss INDEPENDENT!" She wrote on her Facebook page.

Nana Mwafrika was recently in the news after making controversial allegations against Youth Minister Balaam Barugahare.

If she is indeed committed to running for the position, she will face stiff competition from the incumbent Shamim Malende of the National Unity Platform, as well as the current Minister for Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, who announced her bid on the NRM ticket.
