Edson Nuwabiine, the notorious Mbarara conman is in the hands of the Police Flying Squad for conning residents Shillings 200 million.
A resident of Eden in Kakiika Division in Mbarara Municipality, Nuwabiine was picked up on Wednesday from Liverpool Guest House in Mbarara town and transferred to Ibanda district where he allegedly collected money from over 300 people.
Nuwabiine has reportedly been masquerading as an employee of Millennium Gold (U) Limited, a Kampala based Savings and Credit Organization. However, his luck ran out when dozens of his victims started frequenting the office of Ibanda Resident District Commission, Eliasto Akatuhebwa on suspicion that they had been conned.
Jovia Birungi, a resident of Kiruhura district says the suspect convinced her to sell off her livestock to raise Shillings 5 million so as to get shares in Millennium Gold (U) Limited. She says the suspect presented them with fake documents to prove he works for the said firm.
During arrest, police found Nuwabiine in possession of documents and receipt books bearing the logo of Millennium Gold (U) Limited. The documents also showed that Millennium Gold (U) Limited owns a community center know as Mother Care Community Center, which caters for less advantaged children.
Denis Ochama, the Ibanda District Police Commander, says investigations into the matter are ongoing. He however, says the suspect has confessed receiving money from some of the complainants.
