Police in Hoima City has arrested a police constable who shot and injured a civilian while on night patrol.
The officer identified as PC Jeremiah Mukwana is currently in custody at Hoima City Central Police Station where he was deployed.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, says Mukwana and a colleague identified as Noah Nabugere were on patrol on Tuesday night when they came across the victim, Juma Ndozereho, washing his Toyota Wish registration number UAZ 381G Toyota at Kikwete swamp in Hoima City East division.
He says Ndozereho saw the police officers approaching him and decided to run away fearing arrest. However, he was trailed by Mukwana who was riding on a police motorcycle firing live bullets to deflate Ndozereho's car tyres.
Hakiza says in the process, Mukwana shot his victim in the waist, prompting him to sound an alarm for help. Eyewitnesses present at the scene rushed to his aid and rushed him to Hoima regional referral hospital in critical condition.
Hakiza says Mukwana is in jail on charges of unlawfully wounding a person, but his colleague remains on the run.
