Halloween in Uganda isn’t the most festive day if you ask me. The only time people get to dress up and play alter ego is at the KCCA carnival, and even then… the most they do is face paint. This Halloween, however, shouldn’t be the usual dull we have all been accustomed to. Yes, it’s not a Ugandan holiday you may argue, but what harm is there in experiencing different cultures. So here’s how you can switch things up and go full on dark by hosting your own Halloween party this year.

Dress code invites

It needs to be clear as Bad Black’s new Brad Pitt tattoo that the dress code is costume only. Whether it’s a superhero, slutty pumpkin, all yellow Abiriga affair…whatever they can think of. It’s important not to put restrictions on what guys can wear, let the creative vibes flow.

House theme

Since its Halloween, it0s important to decorate your house to create the Halloween feel. For Halloween in Uganda, you can work around what we fear most, which according to Aljazeera is gay persecution. But since that cannot be recreated in decoration, then maybe cobwebs here and there, some fake blood, things that generally create gag reflex.

Lights and Music

Throw out the 15 watt energy savers if you intend to create a Halloween mood. Bring in some Led lights…the ones that switch colors preferably, glow lights, candles can work too. Don’t play pop music-it’s too cheerful. Throw in some rock music, some Michael Jackson thriller type music. That will definitely set the mood.

Alcohol

The party rules still apply on this one, everyone needs to carry a drink. What makes Halloween drinks different though is the funky scary cocktail names. Go ahead and call it the ‘Grimm reaper’ or even ‘the really bloody Mary’…all caps if you want to be really dramatic. Have crazy fun with it.

 Candy

Now giving out candy on any day other than valentines isn’t something you see often. However since it’s a Halloween tradition, why not do it. Don’t go splurging on the expensive candy, or the cheap stuff like kenafric. Find the middle ground.
