The minister of internal affairs, Gen. Jeje Odong will this afternoon address the 10th Parliament on the Rwenzori clashes that has left at least 126 people dead.

The clashes led to the arrest of the Omusinga of Rwenzururu Charles Wesley Mumbere on Sunday in connection with a rebel group that is said to have been operating inside his palace in Kasese.

Fighting broke out inside the palace as the security forces tried to disarm royal guards who were armed with spears, Machetes, grenades and other locally made explosives known as petrol bombs.

The weapons were used to butcher 14 police officers, while security forces in turn shot dead more than 100 attackers.

Addressing the press at Uganda media centre this morning, Gen. Odong could not confirm any charges pressed against the Omusinga, but said he would address parliament about his fate this afternoon.

Asked if there were some prisoners ferried from Kasese to Nalufenya police facility in Jinja where the Omusinga is also being held, the minister denied the claim.

“The people seen at Nalufenya are subjects of the Omusinga who had gone to visit him” he said.

This is contrary to the reports by Kasese Legislator Hon. Centenary who says they saw trucks ferrying in prisoners to Nalufenya yesterday, while others were calling them from police cells for help.

“Actually each truck could be carrying about 200 people if you estimate. Because they are not seated on a bench, they are all bundled lining up in a truck. and as we were passing by the prison cells, others were inside calling us so we don’t know which batch was brought here on yesterday because they were crying out saying Honorable we are here we are suffering, so we are not sure who is inside but at least the two trucks arrived when we were watching” said Hon. Centenary.

By this morning, the death toll had risen to 126 while police continues to search for more. The force could however not rule out an increase in numbers of the dead, neither can they confirm that the 25 bodies recovered yesterday belong to civilians or Royal guards.

Police will also start carrying out postmortem on the bodies of all Royal guards who were killed in the clashes.
