Parliament will today hold a special sitting to honor fallen UPC Chairman, Rtd. Maj Edward Rurangaranga who passed on early this week.
The house last evening broke off for a holiday, the first of its kind in the 10th Parliament.
The late Rurangaranga’s body lay at Uganda house on Wednesday afternoon, where party members and the public paid last respect to him.
Today, his body will be brought to parliament at 10am local time and lie in state, for MPs to pay their tributes to the former politician.
Rurangaranga died aged 87 at his home in Sheema district Monday night. He will be laid to rest on Saturday.
President Yoweri Museveni also directed that the former UPC national chairman be accorded an official burial for the contribution he made to the country.
This was revealed by Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda at a meeting he convened on Wednesday to plan for the burial of the former legislator and local leader.
The meeting was attended by members of Rurangaranga's family led by the widow, Winifred Rurangaranga and children, the leadership of UPC led by party president Jimmy Akena, and government representatives.
Government officials included tourism minister Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, Government Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa, public service minister Muruli Mukasa and finance minister Matia Kasaija.
During the meeting, Rugunda described Rurangaranga as "principled man" who was a mentor to many people.
"Our elder Edward Rurangaranga played a significant role in Uganda's pre- and post-independence history, both at local and national levels. He mentored many and was a principled man. May the Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace."
