Hon. Jeje Odong, Minister of Internal Affairs has this afternoon presented a preliminary statement to Parliament on the killings in Entebbe given investigations are still ongoing.
As at 4th September 2017, 21 women have been killed with the assailants’ modus operandi being manual strangulation and mutilation, according to the minister. The statement attributes the killings to moral decadence, primitive selfishness, drug abuse, alcohol, prostitution and superstition.
Youth unemployment and indiscipline have also been cited as reasons. Government has called for social, cultural & governance reform.
Reacting to the statement, Buhweju Hon. Mwijuke Francis wondered where the crime preventers are in all this, condemning what he termed as the unseriousness with which government is proceeding.
“Where are the crime preventers in all this? I want to condemn the unseriousness with which gov't is proceeding. Who is misleading the President; he's traversing talking about land as if the issue of women killing is unimportant” Mwijuke wondered.
Youth MP Hon. Anna Adeke said the undignified manner in which women are killed is an attack on the progress women have made over the years in Uganda.
Adeke added that “the government says its biggest achievement is security but only in other countries. Police has failed us.”
Kyadondo East MP Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi said while women are being killed, we should not forget the rampant killings everywhere, adding that there is evident conflict between the Minister of Security and IGP and it is at the expense of the lives of Ugandans.
“Its quite unfortunate that we had to wait for a spate of killings before a statement was laid on the floor. The government swore to protect Ugandans, it must live up to its mandate” Kyagulanyi said.
It is at this moment that Hon Jack Wamai Wamanga the Mbale Municipality MP, asked Minister Odong to resign.
“You Mr. Minister (Jeje Odong) should tender in your resignation because you have failed to protect Ugandans” He says.
