A section of legislators under the newly created Parliamentary Forum on Constitutional Supremacy want the Inter Parliamentary Union-IPU to investigate the possible rights violations during the brutal eviction of MPs by state operatives last week.

The MPs also want an apology from the Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga over her action, which led to the invasion of parliament by unauthorized persons.

Last week, Plain clothed security personnel stormed parliament and evicted several legislators who had earlier on been suspended by Kadaga for stirring chaos in the house in an attempt to block Raphael Magyezi, the Igara West MP from moving a motion proposing the scrapping of the presidential age limit.

Francis Zaake, the Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament and Angeline Osege, the Soroti Woman MP sustained injuries in the resultant chaos and were rushed to hospital.

Now, the legislators argue that government planned the chaotic ejection of MPs opposed to the move to scrap the presidential age limit from the constitution that was clearly evident by the early morning deployment over more than 50 plain clothed security personnel in the house.

Led by Reagan Okumu, the Aswa County, James Acidri, the Maracha East MP and Otuke Woman MP, Sylvia Akello, the group accuses Kadaga of conspiring with the state to allow the invasion of parliament.

In their petition signed by 20 out of the 33 members of the Parliamentary Forum on Constitutional Supremacy, the legislators ask the Inter Parliamentary Union to investigate what transpired in the Ugandan parliament on the said date.

IPU is mandated to investigate human rights violations, promote international peace and security among others. IPU works to make parliament more effective in fulfilling its oversight and legislative roles, guaranteeing people's rights, liberties and in securing peace and development. The MPs also want the speaker to spearhead the process of reconciling and stabilizing parliament by engaging all the stakeholders to resolve the matter urgently.

They also call for a national consultative dialogue involving all the stakeholders to discuss the transition and fast-track the establishment of a Constitutional Review Commission.
