Moroto district legislators have maintained silence on the Constitution (Amendment) (No.2) Bill, 2017, which among other seeks to scrap the presidential age limit from the constitution.
The Speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga sent the house on recess to allow legislators to consult their electorate on the bill, but none of the MPs from Moroto has hit the ground.
Voters in Moroto only hear about the bill that has generated tension in the country on the radio. Some of the MPs say they are still planning for the consultation meetings.
Tepeth County MP Albert Lokoru says he will release his consultation program next week as he is currently busy planning on how to engage all stakeholders in the consultations.
The Matheniko County MP Dr. John Baptist Lokii, and Moroto Woman MP, Stella Atyang, say they are still engaged in other activities but will soon embark on the consultations. The MPs didn't specify when they intend to start consultations.
The silence of the MPs has generated mixed reactions from their voters. Helen Kiyai, the Moroto District Female Youth Councilor, says much as some MPs are in favor of the proposed amendment, she says the presidential age limit is "a no go zone".
She says lifting the presidential age limit ignores the role and talents of the young generation. Kiyai shares her views with Stephan Adupa, the Tapac sub county woman councilor.
Simon Kokoi, the Moroto District Youth Chairperson, says scrapping the presidential age limit is the only way to embrace youth in national leadership. He says Uganda can only enjoy true democracy after lifting the presidential age limit cap and that of the LC V chairperson.
