Former Makerere University Vice Chancellor and 2016 presidential candidate, Prof. Vanansius Baryamureeba has advised President Yoweri Museveni to embrace his final years of life and mentor a successor before he clocks 80 years of age.
Baryamureeba was this morning appearing on a local TV station when he explained that the Bible says at 70, one is living on borrowed time, and this is no different in Museveni’s case.
According to the professor who scored a 0.5% in the 2016 presidential election, even Jesus left earth for his disciples to lead the Catholic Church which is still existent. He therefore wants Museveni to follow the Lord’s example and let someone else take charge.
Baryamureeba was reacting to questions about the infamous age limit bill that seeks to amend article 102 (b) of the constitution which caps presidential age at 75 years.
The Raphael Magyezi Bill has met stiff competition from opposition leaders, some NRM party leaders and citizens who believe its removal could see Museveni rule until death.
Baryamureeba who is scheduled to appear before the legal and parliamentary affairs committee believes if the president officially declared that he won’t stand in 2021, the Bill would collapse.
“By the way today, if president Museveni came out and said I am not interested in running for president, this so called age limit amendment Bill would collapse, because they are doing it for him” Baryamureeba said.
He added that NRM should not change a law for an individual. Baryamureeba also advised those claiming that Museveni is like Jesus to Uganda, to remember that even Jesus left his disciples to lead the Catholic Church, which is still intact.
