Opposition Peoples development party, PDP president general Dr. Abed Bwanika alongside Ken Lukyamuzi the man and Asuman Basalirwa have dragged the electoral commission and Uganda communications commission to the High Court over the ongoing debate on  the age limit Bill.

The petitioners’ lawyers of Kakeeto Advocates and Rwakafuuzi & Co. Advocates say they want court to halt any debate on the constitution No. 2 Bill 2017.

They also want court to order the EC to provide an online form for signatures that are currently being collected to cause a referendum on the same subject, and for the UCC to provide a USSD code that will go directly into the database of NIRA for people who are petitioning for the referendum.

Ladislas Rwakafuuzi, one of the petitioners’ lawyers argues that when the EC was approached in June for purposes of a referendum, it did not give the necessary form for collection of signatures till Magyezi tabled the infamous Bill in October.

The development comes at a time when the committee and parliamentary legal affairs has finished drafting a report on the Bill. Committee members were last week holed up at the luxurious Serena Hotel Kigo to come up with a final report, which indicates that a majority of MPs want the constitution amended, so that people beyond the age of 75 can still stand for presidency.

The ruling NRM caucus has since called a meeting at the Prime Minister’s office tomorrow, to discuss a way forward, ahead of the final discussions on the Bill in Parliament.
