Members of parliament have voted to amend Article 102 (b) of the constitution which caps the age limit of presidential candidates at 35-75.
After a hotly contested debate that lasted three days, members of the ruling NRM party beat their opposing colleagues voting 317 out of 97 this afternoon. Two people abstained. Required votes are 289 and NRM smoothly attained these. The Bill now goes to the committee of the whole house.
However this did not surprise many as has been expected, considering NRM having majority numbers in the house.
But, the highlight of the day was Beatrice Anywar Atim, commonly known as mama mabira who voted yes, after several years in opposition.
Formerly an FDC member, Anywar changed goal posts during 2016 parliamentary elections when she stood as an independent and supported Amama Mbabazi, the go-forward leader for president, abandoning her long time friend Doctor Kiiza Besigye.
Today, Anywar nearly broke the internet when she stood firm on the floor of parliament and voted in favour of touching the constitution. She surely broke so many hearts.
Earlier Anywar was tasked by the media to comment about the arrests of MPs Wilfred Niwagaba and Lubega Medard Ssegona, but she chose to abstain, claiming she is an independent who falls in no camp, and so could not comment on the arrest of opposition members.
