The minister of internal affairs has been ordered to table before parliament a statement explaining circumstances under which Buyende DPC Muhammad Kirumira was arrested.
This followed an alarm sounded by the Human Rights Committee of Parliament which condemned the manner in which the embattled celebrity cop was arrested.
Kirumira was picked from his home in Bulenga along Mityana on February 1st, 2018like a rebel by heavily armed police men, a day after he announced his resignation from the police force on social media.
The celebrity cop cited unfavorable working conditions in his widely publicized resignation.
Parliament is however concerned that during the arrest, Police fired live bullets and teargas to disperse residents who had gathered to see what was happening.
Joviah Kamateeka, the Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee of Parliament, says the way Kirumira was picked up was traumatizing for his family and the community. Kirumira’s father Abubaker Kawoya pleaded with arresting officers to allow him drive son to wherever police station they needed him, but these pleas fell on deaf ears.
Kamateeka raised the matter as an issue of national importance, and asked the speaker to direct the Internal Affairs Minister to present a statement to parliament explaining why Kirumira was arrested in that manner.
Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga then directed the Internal Affairs Minister to present a statement on the matter on Tuesday next week.
