Police in Otuke district is investigating two of its senior officers attached to Otuke Central Police Station for alleged extortion. The duo has been identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Aggrey Kasimire and another only identified as Kwesiga.
These were arrested last week and detained for several hours at the North Kyoga Region Police headquarters in Lira Town. The duo is under investigation by the Police Standard Unit at North Kyoga Regional police headquarters.
According to the case file, the two officers allegedly waylaid unidentified Kampala based businessman in Otuke town council on April 2nd, 2018 and confiscated his 200 bags of charcoal in transit to Kampala.
They reportedly asked the businessman to pay them 2 million Shillings to release his charcoal, which he did. However, John Wafula, the Otuke Resident District Commissioner, says the officers asked the businessman to send them the money through a mobile agent and retrieved it.
Mr. Wafula explains that several unscrupulous police officers always extort money from charcoal traders and this has become a norm. David Ongom Mudong, the North Kyoga Region Police spokesperson confirmed the officers are being investigated by PSU.
