The Uganda Virus Research Institute - UVRI has confirmed a measles outbreak in Ntoroko and Mayuge districts, warning locals to be vigilant.
According to Dr. Josephine Bwago, the head of department Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) at UVRI, they received specimen of six measles suspects from Mayuge district on July 11th and another seven from Ntoroko district on July 12, 2018.
However, all the specimens tested positive for measles, and all suspects from Ntoroko are from one sub-county of Kanara, while those of Mayuge are from Baitambogwe, Mpungwe and Wairasa sub-sub-counties.
Laboratory results memo indicates that the suspects are aged between 2 and 4 months.
Measles is an acute and highly contagious viral disease that occurs primarily in children and is marked by running nose, dry cough, conjunctivitis, or swollen eyelids and inflamed eyes, watery eyes, and photophobia, or sensitivity to light.
Government, in May this year announced an outbreak of measles in 26 districts across the country including; Amuru, Kamuli, Mbale and Butebo as the most affected districts.
