Wakiso Chief Magistrate Easter Nakadama Mubiru has tasked prison warders to ensure that Abubaker Kalungi, the suspect in the murder of Former Buyende District Police Commander Muhammad Kirumira gets medical attention.
The development comes after the suspect asked the Magistrate to compel prison authorities to provide medical treatment for him, when he appeared before court this morning.
The suspect says he has never received any treatment since he was remanded to Kigo Prison on October 4.
"My lord, I am very sick. I have pain everywhere. In my limbs, my back, my legs and everywhere. I find difficulty in sitting and walking," he reported.
At this point, the Magistrate asked Prison Warders to clarify whether Kigo Prison had a dispensary and why Kalungi had not been given medical treatment, a right he should enjoy, even under custody. She then directed them to ensure that Kalungi is given due attention adding that any condition that cannot be handled at Kigo should be referred to Murchison Bay Hospital.
Frank Baine the Uganda Prisons Services spokesperson noted that all inmates are always treated whenever they are unwell but added that some suspects feign illness to attract attention.
Kalungi, a 47 year-old carpenter, and others still at large, are alleged to have assassinated the former Buyende District Commander Mohammed Kirumira and a female friend Resty Mbabazi on September 8 at about 9 p.m. the duo was killed from Bulenga, a suburb of Kampala.
Mubiru adjourned the case to November 14 2018.
