Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department-CID are in Lira where investigations into the misuse of funds meant for the construction of Akii- Bua memorial Stadium have commenced.
The CID Director Grace Akullo says the officers already met with Alex Oremo the Lira District LCV Chairperson in a move to successfully probe possible fraud and financial mismanagement by the district officials.
The team of investigators is expected to visit the construction site of the Akii Bua stadium at Erute Village and interact with selected members of the public, during their stay in Lira.
Also, Mark Tivu the Chief Administrative Officer Lira and Hudson Omoko the District Engineer are expected to record statements regarding the alleged misuse of the funds.
This scandal came to the limelight when MPs from Lango led by Denis Hamson Obua of Ajuri County and his Kwania counterpart Tony Ayoo petitioned President Museveni demanding for a forensic audit to establish value for money after the structure that was put up failed to meet standards expected.
Lira district received 665 million shillings from the Ministry of Education and Sports to facilitate the construction of the stadium Ssince 2013.
The Chief Administration officer says the money was used to fund preliminary work including bush clearing, opening access roads, draining swampy areas, planting of trees, building temporary pavilion and a VIP three stance pit latrine.
He and the district engineer are currently being held at Parliament police division. The duo and other Lira district officials were meeting members of the committee of parliament on Commissions Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises COSASE chaired by Anita Among, the Bukedea woman MP this morning to explain the use of 666m.
However, even after accepting that they indeed received and signed for the said money, they could not produce an architectural structure of a latrine as demanded for by MPs.
The committee chairperson handed the duo to police. They will spend a night in coolers until tomorrow when they return to face the angry MPs.
