Uganda will on Friday the 8th of March 2019 join the rest of the world to mark International Women’s Day (IWD) as designated by the United Nations.

The Day is dedicated to taking stock of the progress made towards achieving women’s full and equal dignity as well as protection and promotion of women’s rights in all spheres of life as enshrined in the Constitution.

The minister of state for gender and culture affairs Peace Mutuzo says on this Day, people are supposed to recommit themselves to further actions towards attainment of women’s Empowerment.

The global theme for this year; “Think Equal, Build Smart and Innovate for Change”is a call to all stakeholdersto create a paradigm shift for transforming mindsets to the goal of gender equality as well as identifying new ways of advancing the women’s agenda at all levels.

At country level, the theme chosen for this year’s commemoration is “Empowering Women through Innovative Approaches to Social Protection: A Pre-requisite for Inclusive and Sustainable Development”.

According to Mutuzo, this theme recognizes the importance of providing social protection to women with the aim of minimizing their vulnerability, building their potential through innovative approaches so that they contribute to and benefit from the development process.

“In Uganda, women and girls are in great need of social protection given the critical role they play in ensuring the sustainability of households, improved livelihoods and overall wellbeing of the community” she said.
