The Uganda peoples defence forces, UPDF under AMISOM on Monday 1st, April 2019, killed 22 Alshabab terrorists who attempted to attack AMISOM Forward Operating Bases at Quoroyole, Buulo Mareer and Golwen in Lower Shabelle Region of Somalia.
The UPDF however lost 4 gallant soldiers and 6 sustained minor injuries in the same attack.
Also, eight of their vehicles that included two Vehicle Born Improvised Explosives were destroyed.
The army recovered 4 PK Rifles, 2 Rocket Propeller Guns, 2 Recoilless Guns,1 Walkie Talkie and 18 Sub Machine Gun Rifles.
Meanwhile, a top Al-Shabaab commander defected to the government side in Lower Shabelle region. Mohamed Ibrahim Bitow and one of his body-guard, defected to the Somali government. He was in charge of over 100 Al-Shabaab fighters.
Bitow told authorities that he abandoned his position with the group, because he had seen a lot of civilians suffering helplessly at the hands of Al-Shabaab.
He told the media that he fought alongside his Al-Shabaab comrades in many battles against the Somali National Army (SNA). “I was a commander for over 100 fighters and we carried out many attacks at bases of Somali military,” he confessed.
Bitow has been fighting alongside Al-Shabaab fighters for the last nine years. Al-Shabaab has not yet commented on the surrender of the commander to the Somali government side.
