The Uganda Communications Commission has instructed all telecommunication providers to validate and update existing subscriber SIM registration information to insure full compliance with SIM card registration guidelines.

In a statement released this afternoon, UCC explains that this is not a new registration exercise but rather a validation and updating of already existing information, meaning that not every registered customer will be affected.

Those with issues will now be contacted by their service providers to go and update their information.

Service providers are expected to work on subscribers with unknown numbers registered against their NIN, SIM cards registered with both names and NIN of a known person but not the SIM card holder. “This is common with people who did not have their National IDs by the time of the last registration but have since acquired them.

Also affected are; SIM cards registered with a subscriber’s name, but NIN is of another person, SIM cards registered with a subscriber’s names but NIN is of a known but unavailable person “common with people who used the 197 registration method and just submitted a random NIN, SIM cards registered with the name of an unknown person but the NIN is of the current subscriber, SIM registration or SIM swap for persons with no biometric capability e.g persons with special needs.

Registrations on a single NIN above the approved limit across the networks. The recommendation is 10 SIM cards per NIN per network, and finally, Misalignment of subscriber registration information and mobile money KYC data.
