The Unit Disciplinary Court-UDC of the Military Police Brigade has charged bodyguards of Uganda’s ambassador to Burundi retired Major General Matayo Kyaligonza with common assault.

The duo, Corporal Peter Bushindiki and Robert Okurut appeared on Tuesday before the Unit Disciplinary Court chaired by Lt. Col. Richard Okum in Mbuya Military barracks.

According to Prosecution, while in Seeta, Mukono district on February 24th, 2019, the duo assaulted Sergeant Esther Namaganda, a traffic police officer and Deogracious Peter Otai, a journalist attached to Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, UBC.

Namaganda in her statement claimed that the officers and their boss attacked her when she tried to stop them from making a U-turn at wrong spot.

The duo also assaulted Otai who took pictures of the incident, which went viral on social media and helped police with the case.  However, suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges and applied for bail, which was granted on stringent terms.

According to Brigadier Richard Karemire the army Spokesperson, the officers were released on condition that they will not get out of the barracks without authorization and must report to the legal officer three times a week.

The army prosecution told UDC that the inquiries were incomplete and asked for an adjournment to April, 26th 2019.
