Buganda Road Grade one Magistrate Esther Nahirya has released the Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine on a UGX 1 million cash Bail and UGX 10m not cash for his sureties.
Today, Bobi Wine became the first Ugandan to appear for a hearing via video conference on a charge of disobedience of statutory duty (when he participated in the anti-social media protest) on July 11th 2018.
The legislator was arrested on Monday as he made way to Kibuli CID head offices where he had been summoned to make a statement on the offence of inciting violence when he allegedly invited members of the public to join him in the walk to the office of the IGP to seek permission to start walk to work protests.
He was immediately arraigned before Buganda Road court and remanded to Luzira until today. Nahirya also set May 23rd as the day hearing of this case resumes.
Earlier, prosecution asked court not to release Bobi Wine on Bail as he may abscond, arguing that he did the same in July 2018 when he was released on police bond.
Despite this argument, Nahirya released Bobi Wine, but clearly stated that he is not to engage in any unlawful political assemblies.
“I find the sureties substantial and therefore release the accused person on the following grounds; the applicant is bonded at 1m shillings cash, each surety 10m shillings not cash. The applicant is barred from engaging in unlawful demonstrations in the event that this condition is breached, it shall lead to automatic lapse of his bail” the magistrate warned.
The MP had three sureties; former Ethics Minister Miria Matembe, MPs Gaffa Mbwatekamwa and Patrick Nsamba.
