Police in Lira have in custody two brothers accused of masterminding the death of their sibling, also a retired Uganda Peoples Defense Force-UPDF solider identified as Richard Atim.

The duo, Mark Atine and his brother only identified as Peter, both residents of Barpii village, Telela Parish in Aromo Sub County are accused of killing Richard Atim, who retired from UPDF Army in 2018 over a land dispute.

According to police reports, suspects allegedly assaulted Atim before tying him on a tree for several hours leading to his death. The horrific scenes followed controversy from the sale of their family land without his consent.

The Aromo Sub County LC III chairperson David Elic says Atim was scheduled to appear before the clan leadership to respond to accusations of disturbing his family members. He however returned from Somalia in March, 2019 and was furious when he found out that part of their family land had been sold by siblings while he was away.

The North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong says the suspects are in custody at Aromo Police Post pending transfer to Lira CPS and police has preferred murder charges against them, pending sanctioning by the Resident State Attorney
