President Yoweri Museveni and his Kenyan counterpart H.E Uhuru Kenyatta will on Tuesday 12th September launch the joint Kenya-Uganda cross border programme for sustainable peace and socio-economic transformation for Karamoja cluster. The programme launch will take place in Moroto.
The development was announced this morning in Kampala by Ali Abdi, the Ag. UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda while addressing the press at the media center.
According to Mr. Abdi, the programme covering Turkana and West Pokot in Kenya and Karamoja in Uganda will positively help Karamoja which has in the past been affected by frequent droughts, underdevelopment and isolation.
“Their shared identity represents a great opportunity to define indigenous approaches to development and prosperity. The United Nations support to this cross-border joint is part of a commitment to support governments to put people and planet first” Mr. Abdi said.
Adding that the joint programme enables the UN to respond to the national visions of both countries, the East African vision 2030 and the aspirations of the African Union agenda 2063.
In October last year, the UN country team in Uganda hosted their counterparts from Kenya to discus the programme and agree on the division of labour. Some of the organizations participating in the programme include; UNCDF, UNDP, UNWOMEN and WFP.
“This cross border programme is an opportunity for current and new partners to join this effort to address matters peace humanitarian work and development opportunities in the region” he noted.
