The Uganda National Examinations Board, UNEB has Friday released the 2019 Uganda Certificate of Education UCE examination result at Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala.
A total of 337,720 candidates registered and sat for the 2019 UCE examination from 3,531 centers across the country.
The examinations started on October 11, with the briefing of candidates and ended on November 15 2019.
According to Dan Odongo, the UNEB secretary-general, of the 337,720 candidates, 144,260 were from government schools and 193,437 private. The number of female candidates was bigger than that of their male counterparts making up to 50.2 percent, from 49.5 percent in 2018.
401 candidates had various forms of disabilities; blindness (36), dyslexia (sighted 21; blind four), hearing impairment (60) and severe physical handicap (75), while those with low vision are 88 and those in need of extra time were 117.
The UNEB Chairperson Prof. Mary Okwakor said today’s examination results have been released on the same date as last year 31st January.
UNEB received a lot of support from all members of the public especially about possible cheating at some centres across the country. She says this is the reason the examination was conducted free of leakage.
The girls however, performed poorly in Science subjects and mathematics. Overall, there has been an improvement in performance in the subject of Biology.
Prof. Okwakor thanked the minister of education Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni and her staff for their continued support. She also congratulated the candidates who have performed well in the examination.
At Luzira Prison, 49 inmates registered, however, only 48 sat. while none of these passed in Div one, 9 were in Div 2, 14 in Div 3, 23 in Div 4 and only 2 failed.
According to Odongo, there has been improvement of performance at all levels. 92% of the candidates that sat are able to continue to A ‘level and other institutions.
Physics and chemistry were the most poorly performed subjects and almost 60% of the candidates failed them. Female candidates performed better than their male counterparts in English language; however, the males did better in all other subjects, particularly sciences.
UNEB has withheld results of 1,262 candidates due to malpractice. These are a result of teachers providing assistance to candidates as they write examinations or even during practical papers, while others are of students copying from others.
The affected candidates will be given fair hearings. For UPE 2019, hearings will begin on Monday 3rd February 2020, and the candidates will be required to appear with responsible teachers.
