The Elections Commission is set to decide the next course of action after police yet again blocked the intended consultative meeting by the Kyadondo East Member of Parliament also 2021 Presidential hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine.
The Commission Chairperson, Justice Mugenyi Simon Byabakama while responding to questions from journalists in a meeting with members of the Inter Religious Council of Uganda-IRCU at their offices in Mengo on Monday, acknowledged receipt of a petition from Kyagulanyi, requesting for another deliberation between the People Power faction and administrators of the Uganda Police Force.
According to Justice Byabakama, they would have probably met on Monday to decide what to do with Kyagulanyi, if it wasn’t for the meeting with the IRCU . He confirmed that Kyagulanyi wrote seeking a meeting between Monday February 24-28 and that they are still within that time scope. “We are going to sit and deliberate on the matter and take a decision” he noted.
After his appearance at the Buganda Road Court over the infamous OTT case, the Kyadondo East Legislator told journalists that he had exhausted all avenues provided under the law to allow him conduct his consultations and yet police was still frustrating him. Kyagulanyi added that the continuous harassment by police is indicative of a force that has taken over the role of the Electoral Commission.
He added that after they have done everything needed to do, he would be informing the country what next as this is the last step that they are on dealing with the police and the Electoral Commission.
On Monday, police blocked the People Power leaders from holding a consultative meeting at Pope Paul in Ndeeba. Police and LDU officers were heavily deployed and several people arrested for pelting stones at them.
Police Deputy spokesperson Polly Namaye said the faction had not conformed to the requirements.
"On 31st Jan 2020, the director operations AIGP Assuman Mugenyi wrote to remind Hon. Kyagulanyi Sentamu to submit the proposal agreed on with the electoral commission but this was not done. The Police therefore still awaits the assurance that there shall be an effort to respect law and order by abiding with agreed upon strategies in order to embark on the teams consultative meeting schedule” Namaye told the press on Monday.
